We use first conditional sentences to talk about real and possible future situation, and its consequence. The structure is usually if + present simple and will (‘ll)/won’t + infinitive

  • If you work hard, you’ll pass your exams
  • The boss won’t be very pleased if we’re late for the meeting

We use to second conditional to talk about a hypothetical or unreal situation, impossible things, imaginary present or future situation, and its consequence. The structure is usually if + past simple and would (‘d)/wouldn’t + infinitive.

  • If I had a job, I’d get my own flat
  • I would get on better with my parents if I didn’t live with them.

We normally use third conditional sentences to talk about how things could have been different in the past, for hypothetical or imaginary situations. The structure is usually if + past perfect and would (‘d)/wouldn’t have +past participle (‘d).

  • If I’d known about the meeting, I would have gone
  • You wouldn’t have lost your job if you hadn’t been late every day
